An exploration of the political and economic dimensions of China-Taiwan relations, as well as the role played by the US in these relations. Topics covered include Sino-US relations, Chinese nationalism, identity politics in Taiwan, Taiwan Strait Crises, the US approach to China-Taiwan relations, China’s Taiwan policy, Taiwan’s China policy, and economic ties between China and Taiwan. The key questions we will address for this course are as follows. Why do China-Taiwan relations matter? What is the role played by the US in China-Taiwan relations? What are the approaches that China and Taiwan have taken to deal with each other? What caused the ebb and flow of China-Taiwan relations? Will the growth of China-Taiwan economic ties lead to peace in the Taiwan Strait? How will China-Taiwan-US relations evolve in the future?
