BIOL 154 Kenya: The Frontier of Future Farming

4

Students will spend 3 weeks at a host research site in Kenya. In the morning, immersive language and cultural training would be provided by Peace Corps Kenya Language and Culture facilitators. In the afternoon students will work with scientists at the research site on a project similar to a typical summer undergraduate research experience. For those seeking an F7, each week they will experience a different lab environment (molecular, organismal and field). I will hold classes for F7 students on Monday afternoons and weekends to bring students up to speed on basic plant science content. On Tuesday, they will meet with a lab host and discuss recent papers and their impact on agriculture. On Wednesday and Thursday, they will conduct an experiment related to the read research. On Monday and Wednesday evenings, students will meet and dine with guest seminar speakers on local plant science or conservation projects. On the weekends, the students will visit cultural events, other conservation programs and parks.
