Student teaching is a required component for all Rhodes College candidates seeking teacher licensure in the state of Tennessee. To enroll, candidates must submit a Clinical Student Teaching Application during registration in the semester prior to placement. Candidates complete a placement in a local urban or suburban school district under the joint oversight of a district mentor and a faculty supervisor. The placement begins at the start of the district’s academic calendar and concludes after 16 weeks, and candidates follow the calendar of their assigned district rather than the Rhodes academic calendar. Throughout the semester, candidates are required to submit weekly lesson plans and complete weekly reflections to support their ongoing professional development. Candidates will be formally observed four times during the semester and will meet with their faculty supervisor both before and after each observation. In addition, candidates participate in occasional seminars led by a Rhodes faculty member to reflect on and discuss their teaching practices and experiences. Attendance at orientations hosted by both the partner school district and Rhodes College is mandatory. A minimum grade of B is required to successfully complete this course. Candidates who earn a grade below a B must repeat the course to meet licensure requirements.
Prerequisite: Completion of all teaching licensure coursework
