This course is a survey of Rhodes College's history in Memphis between 1925 and 2025, with an emphasis on the ways that the college has influenced and been influenced by its location in Memphis and the Mid-South. Topics will include the college's relationship to the legacy of the Old South (Benjamin Palmer, Nathan Bedford Forrest, Shelby Foote, commemoration of Confederate soldiers), its affiliation with the Presbyterian Church (the Diehl Heresy Trial, the Bellingrath Trust, preparation of future clergy, academic chairs funded by local churches), its connections to Memphis music, its relationship to various local communities (African American, Hispanic, Jewish, Muslim), and its commitment to social activism (Kinney Program, Bonner Scholars, Ames Plantation, Zion Cemetery, Memphis public schools), among others.
