MST 360 Public Memory, Race, and Place in Memphis

Fall
4

Students will explore animating tensions between race, place, and public memory in Memphis. Grounded in communication, media, and public memory scholarship, students will study the interplay of absence and presence, space and place, past and present, as well as memory and forgetting in Memphis. Over the course of the semester, students will develop a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics that make the ethical preservation, presentation, correction, and remembrance of Memphis’ past so challenging.
