This course will examine of the development of French music in relation to other arts and societal events, focusing on Paris as the center of new artistic developments at the turn of the twentieth-century. The course will provide an introduction to artistic movements during this period, including musical composers: Fauré, Debussy, Ravel, Satie, and Stravinsky. Students will develop a vocabulary to describe and discuss musical works in general and of this period specifically, integrate musical works into the context of the early twentiethcentury Parisian society.
