This seminar introduces the methodologies, history, debates, and critical themes in ethnomusicology, which might be defined as the study of music in its social and cultural context. Stressing the interdisciplinary nature of the field, students will explore the interfaces between ethnomusicology and fields like anthropology, folklore, history, linguistics, philosophy, performance studies, literary theory, cultural studies, area studies, gender and sexuality studies, and cognitive science. In engaging with these methodologies, theories, and case studies, students will acquire a toolkit for performing research, analyzing, listening to, and performing music in its cultural context.
