This class examines political and ethical questions that concern data science, big data, and issues related to digital technology use and its effects on individuals, society, government, and the environment. The course introduces ethical theories, regulatory frameworks, case studies, and academic literature. Topics include data collection, consent, analysis, and application; as well as social and political issues related to data bias, algorithmic bias, digital citizenship, privacy and protection, security, and data storytelling. We consider the ways in which digital technologies influence social justice, equality, democracy, and our shared future. We will approach these questions from the perspectives of users/consumers, developers, analysts, regulators, and governments. No previous background in ethics or data analysis is required.
