This course first offers an introductory grounding in recent linguistic and sociolinguistic research relevant to the study of regional variations of Spanish and of Spanish in contact with other languages. From there, the course examines a corpus of selections from literature, cinema, and television that highlight the rich range of Spanish language variation in the Americas. Among other topics of focus, selections offer opportunities to explore language-education policy, language politics, identity, efforts to decolonize language, code-switching, translanguage strategies, second language acquisition models, translation, interpreting, and subtitling.
Prerequisite: Spanish 302 or permission of instructor
