URBN 366 Documenting Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Oral Histories and Geographies in Memphis: Methods and Fieldwork

4

This course documents Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) oral histories and geographies in Memphis, transforming community narratives into public-facing spatial stories. Students work with collecting, analyzing and visualizing qualitative data—including interviews, oral histories, photographs, and field observations—and learn to integrate these materials into GIS-based StoryMaps that examine place, mobility, access, and lived experience. The course connects directly to Urban Studies by analyzing how planning, neighborhoods, infrastructure, and displacement shape AAPI community life, and how AAPI community creates place and memories. Emphasizing participatory and ethical practices, the course equips students with spatial analysis and public storytelling skills applicable to community planning, public health, and social justice work.
