AMS 320 Introduction to Historical Linguistics

4

This course serves as an introduction to historical linguistics, the study of language change over time. Course topics will include fundamental aspects of linguistic variation and evolution (such as phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics) as well as techniques (for instance, the comparative method and historical reconstruction) for exploring these processes of change. Additionally, we will examine how issues of geography, dialect, and technology all act as influences that have promoted or inhibited language change historically and continue to do so in our world today.

Prerequisites: LANG 280 or ENGL 315 or prior fulfillment of the F10 requirement
