Long before the term “queer” was first used, people lived and loved beyond the categories of gender and sexuality we use today. This course has three focuses: (1) archaeological studies of gender and sexuality before the gender binary existed (2) the historical development of modern-day categories of gender and sexuality, and (3) theoretical discussions of gender and sexuality as a process of ‘becoming.’ Thinking through these three focuses, the class will draw on literatures from archaeology, anthropology, sociology, history, and gender studies to discuss queerness in the past, present, and future.
