This course examines how Buddhism engages with the challenges of the modern world. Through case studies of socially engaged Buddhist movements in Asia, we will explore how Buddhists respond to contemporary issues such as gender, education, and ecology. We will ask how a 2,500-year-old tradition can speak to the concerns of the present: What resources within Buddhism offer guidance for living in the modern world? Who is developing new approaches, and what can we learn from them?
