Gender and Sexuality Studies

Gender and Sexuality Studies is an interdisciplinary program that centers the social, political, and cultural construction of gender and sexuality. Courses in Gender and Sexuality Studies range widely in focus and content. However, what these courses share is a recognition, shaped by feminist and queer perspectives, of the ways in which gender and sexuality function as part of a dynamic system, one that shapes identity, structures knowledge, and determines the distribution of social and political power.

Requirements for a Minor in Gender and Sexuality Studies

A total of twenty-four (24) credits as follows:

  1. Gender and Sexuality Studies 200. Introduction to Gender and Sexuality Studies.
  2. Gender and Sexuality Studies 400. Feminist Theory.
  3. Four courses selected from the Gender and Sexuality Studies curriculum.

Two of these courses must come from fields outside of one’s major. A list of GSS electives is updated and circulated every semester. Students with questions are encouraged to contact the program chair.

For one of these four courses, students may elect to pursue an Internship through Gender and Sexuality Studies. All internship applications go through Career Services.  In order to receive academic credit for the Internship, students must consult with the chair of Gender and Sexuality Studies to devise a set of readings and reflection papers to accompany the internship.
