ENGL 290 Academic Writing: Language, Knowledge, and Power

This course examines how we shape and are shaped by language, knowledge, and power. Students will critically engage with theories in composition studies, collaborative learning, writing pedagogy, education, and cognitive psychology. Through class discussions, students will interrogate the complex dynamics of power inherent in academic writing, exploring how various social, cultural, and institutional factors shape knowledge production and dissemination. Simultaneously, students will participate in a community partnership, allowing them to apply their theoretical knowledge to the practice of writing tutoring at a Memphis public high school.
