The film Apocalypse Now has been called a masterpiece, a mess, a work of genius, and the height of pretentious filmmaking. This course will use the film as a jumping off point to discuss Conrad’s Heart of Darkness (upon which the film is loosely based) and imperialism, the Vietnam War, and America’s reckoning with the dramatic cultural and political changes of the sixties.
