HLEQ 221 Clinical Practices and Health Disparities

4

Clinical Practices and Health Disparities interrogates the role that implicit bias performs in the attitudes, practices, and policies of healthcare organizations and practitioners, a performance that results in diminished health outcomes for stigmatized populations. Therefore, this course will (1) foster an awareness of this reality and (2) guide students in the development of a set of personal skills and institutional strategies that will minimize the effects of bias and maximize equity in health outcomes. With a renewed understanding and appreciation of health care contexts, we will engage our local community (its culture, its problems, its aspirations), undertake an engaged learning project on working with interpreters, and reconsider our perspectives about our relationship with Latinx Memphis and the Spanish speaking world.
