HLEQ 350 is a lab course introducing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and their application to public health research. We will explore spatial data addressing social determinants of health (SDOH) and potentially related health outcomes. R programming skills will be introduced to import and spatially combine data sets, analyze relationships among variables, and display findings in tables, figures, and maps. Topics addressed include public health vocabulary, coordinate reference systems, spatial analyses, mapping, and relevant data sources. The course will introduce statistical analysis techniques to use with data combined at the area level. Students should leave this course with spatial analysis skills to explore relationships between SDOH and health outcomes.
