HLEQ 360 Pediatric Bioethics

4

This course explores ethical issues in the practice of pediatric medicine. We explore issues such as the role and limits of parental decision-making authority, the right to an open future, informed consent and assent, healthcare provider conscientious objection, end-of-life care, moral distress, organ donation, genetic testing, research ethics, and best practices for conducting an ethics consultation. Throughout the semester we take up a series of case studies that provide the opportunity to identify, analyze, and potentially resolve ethical issues that emerge in the care of children. Students will have the opportunity to practice conducting ethic consultations.
