This course is a workshop designed to prepare students to write competitive applications for postgraduate scholarships and other selective scholarly, leadership, and public-service opportunities. Students will 1) examine scholarship criteria and application materials for awards such as the Fulbright, Truman, and Rhodes Scholarships, 2) read relevant literature on persuasive writing and reflect on their academic, professional, leadership, service, and personal experiences, 3) identify the values and commitments that shape their goals, and develop strategies for articulating those experiences effectively. Particular attention will be given to communicating resilience, adaptability, intellectual curiosity, ethical leadership, cross-cultural competencies, civic engagement, and other qualities valued by competitive postgraduate programs and fellowships. Throughout the course, students will develop application strategies, draft and revise personal statements, and give and receive constructive feedback.
