An analysis of China’s foreign policy and relations from 1949 to the present. Particular emphasis is placed on the change of China’s international status from a less developed country after WWII to one of the biggest powers in the world today, as well as the development of China’s relations with both the major powers and the Global South. The key questions we will address for this course are as follows. How are China’s foreign policies made? What are the differences and the similarities between China’s foreign policies at different stages since 1949? What are the key factors that affect the making of these policies? How have the political and economic relations between China and other countries in our world evolved? Is the growth of China’s international influence that we have been experiencing since the 1990s posing a threat or an opportunity to our world?
