This course is designed to familiarize students with major themes in security studies, including interstate, intrastate, critical, and transnational security using established international relations (IR) perspectives. We will address questions such as why countries resort to violence rather than peaceful resolution of disagreements; how civil war is influenced by rebel capacity and external intervention; and the extent to which security/peace can be achieved through international law and norms.
