MST 370 Cities in Film

Fall
4

Cities have been central as both setting and subject throughout global cinematic history. From Hollywood to Tokyo to Paris and beyond, urban lives and environments have shaped the aesthetics, narratives, and themes in movies of all kinds. This course will offer an interdisciplinary introduction to how cities have appeared in films from around the world. It will trace key moments and developments in film history and discuss ways that films have illuminated various aspects of urban experiences. Using a variety of sources, with films themselves as our central texts, we will think about the crucial and complex relationship between films and cities in both past and present.
