MUSC 250 Music Urbanism

Spring
4

This course examines the intersection of music and cities: how is music being used as a tool to solve urban challenges and deliver on urbanist ideals, and how are music ecosystems situated in and supported by cities? Through the lens of popular song, students will consider the problems and promises of the City in new ways, from gentrification and displacement to housing, transit, crime and more. We will engage with leaders in cities across the U.S. and in Europe who are working in varied roles that deal with music urbanism, from those leading a city office of arts and culture to those running nonprofits focused on music education, economy or infrastructure. Students will develop solutions to real urban challenges around music and will learn how to approach arts and culture strategy.
