This advanced seminar examines the dynamic and multifaceted nature of German-speaking cultures, extending beyond the traditional borders of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Through the analysis of a wide range of authentic texts—including literature, film, journalistic articles, and historical documents—students will deepen their proficiency in German while engaging with complex social, historical, and cultural questions. Possible topics for this course include the rich cultural and historical development of key urban centers like Berlin, Hamburg, Vienna, and Zürich; the history of migration to and from the German-speaking world; and the vibrant diasporic German-speaking communities found across the globe. The language of instruction is German and corresponds to standard proficiency guidelines for "advanced mid" (B2.2) language learners.
